Translational research seeks to apply the knowledge gained through basic research to practical outcomes in medical diagnoses, treatments, and interventions.

Aging

Kaarin Anstey's lab is interested in: Cognitive ageing and dementia, brain ageing, neuropsychology, depression, suicidality, predictors of longevity, longitudinal methods, injury prevention (falls and driving), wellbeing and health outcomes, interrelationships among cognition and sensorimotor function, international comparisons in health, productivity and ageing.

Marc Budge's lab is interested in: The prevention, non-invasive monitoring and management of cognitive and cardio-vascular decline with ageing and disease with a particular interest in multi-modality brain and vascular imaging and developing community-based prevention; and monitoring programmes at the interface of IT, aged care and chronic disease which, in conjunction with smart house and environmental design, will allow older adults to "age-well-in-place".

Nicolas Cherbuin's labs is particularly interested in identifying how health, lifestyle, and genetic factors influence brain structure and to relate these changes to cognition and change in cognition in ageing and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia.

Diagnostic Techniques

Ted Maddess' and Andrew James' labs are currently focusing on the TrueField objective perimeter. The TrueField employs video monitoring of pupil diameter in response to multifocal visual stimuli in order to map human visual fields.

Andrew Janke's lab is interested in: Distributed processing/data basing, non-linear registration, large scale automated image analysis, MR hardware development, Non-imaging approaches to MRI distortion correction, GNU/Linux clustering, Video card based VPU processing and automated performance and quality metrics for Medical imaging research.

Eye Diseases

Ted Maddess' lab's clinically oriented research is aimed at Glaucoma but they are also interested in Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson's Disease.
